FLOWERFIELD TOWNSHIP
ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, MICHIGAN
NEWS RELEASE
August 4, 2003
To: Residents and Property Owners of Flowerfield Township
This letter gives advance notice that in March of 2004, Flowerfield Township will begin actively enforcing two ordinances entitled: MOTOT VEHICLE STORAGE ORDINANCE AND LITTER ORDINANCE.
The motor vehicle storage ordinance restricts the unlicensed outdoor storage of unused or non-operating motor vehicles upon public and private property.
The LITTER ORDINANCE restricts outdoor storage of scrap and waste materials on public and private premises. Examples of litter include, but are not limited to, inoperable and discarded appliances and equipment, broken and discarded building materials, tires, motor vehicle parts, non-functioning mobile homes or recreational vehicles, and other non-functioning equipment.
The LITTER ORDINANCE states: “It shall be unlawful of any person, without consent of the public authority having supervision of public property or the owner of private property, to dump, deposit, place, throw, or leave, or cause or permit the dumping, depositing, placing, throwing or leaving of litter or any other materials on any public or private property or waters with the Township of Flowerfield, other than property designated and set aside for such purposes.”
Violation of either ordinance is a Municipal Civil Infraction. Flowerfield Township authorities are seeking willing compliance with these ordinances and will make all reasonable efforts to obtain compliance without resorting to issuance of a Municipal Civil Infraction. A letter of notification and warning, will be sent prior to issuance of citations with a time period of resolution. However, a Municipal Civil Infraction and and assessed fine is the final recourse, if necessary.
This letter is being sent well in advance of any enforcement activities to encourage all township residents and property owners to self-evaluate their properties and, if necessary, remedy and violating conditions prior to March 2004.
Copies of the ordinance can be obtained by accessing the Flowerfield Township Website at flowerfieldtownship.net , or Charles Halifax, the Zoning Administrator, P.O. Box 51, Marcellus (269-624-6387), or Carroll Parmeter, Supervisor, 269-646-9251.
